To celebrate the final day of Hanukkah, Founding member Jamie Gross has shared a video of her family saying the blessing over the Hanukkah candles for Day #18 of our Virtual Advent Calendar. Thank you, Gross family, for letting us share a glimpse into your family tradition!
Jamie is an elementary school speech-language pathologist with a love for singing, dancing, and performing.
Prayer #1: The Blessing Over the Hanukkah Candles
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melekh ha’olam, asher kid’shanu b'mitzvotav, v'tzivanu l'hadlik ner shel Hanukkah.
Blessed are you Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who has made us holy through God’s commandments, and commanded us to light the Hanukkah candles.
Prayer #2: The Blessing for Miracles
Barukh atah Adonai, Eloheinu Melekh ha’olam, She’ahsa neesim la’avotaynu bayamim haheim baz’man hazeh.
Blessed are you Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, who performed wonders for our ancestors in history at this very time of year.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar. This year, it started on December 10th and ends the evening of December 18th. The festival is observed by lighting the candles of a menorah. One branch is typically placed above or below the others and its candle is used to light the other eight candles. This unique candle is called the shamash. Each night, one additional candle is lit by the shamash until all eight candles are lit together on the final night of the festival.
